Hey Woofa’s,
I was doing Billy’s poo pick up the other day- such a fun job!
It got me wondering what everyone else does with their dog’s poo?
I’ve had dogs most of my life so I’ve picked up my fair share of it.
My dad use to wait for it to dry up and then mow over it, claiming he was fertilising the soil….hmmmm!!
Mum and I use to argue which bin the poo went in. I use to put it in the green waste bin!
Apparently, according to Council this is NOT where dog poo goes, it goes in the red bin!!!
Yep it’s a crappy topic, yes I just said that, but someone has to talk about it.
I have a bucket in the back yard that has a plastic bag in it and a lid over the top.
I scan the yard for his poo and I use old long barbecue tongs to pick it up.
Then I place it in the bucket, tie up the bag and place it in the red bin.
Surely there’s got to be a more GREEN way to do this.
I’ve been watching a lot of Gardening Australia.
They are all about composting and not wasting anything, which is a good thing for our environment.
This also got me thinking of ways we could compost our pet poo.
No you can’t put it in your normal compost or worm farm, apparently there are separate composter’s for your pet poo.
I googled Pet Poo Composter, the top two that came up were –
They do vary in price AND when I went onto the actual Bunnings website and searched their Tumbleweed Pet Poo Composter, nothing came up.
So I’m not sure if they don’t sell it on-line and you have to go in-store, or they no longer sell it at all, doesn’t hurt to ask when you’re next there though.
The EnsoPet Pet Poo Composter, while made in China, seems to be the easiest to use and install, just some light digging to get it in, some worms, some poo, Enzyme booster and away you go.
No matter where you live, if you look up Pet Poo Composter I’m sure you’ll find one that suits.
Put it this way, every time you walk into your backyard, if you have to dodge the poo, you’re not picking it up often enough.
It also depends on how many dogs you have, and how big your backyard is.
Because there’s only one of Billy, there’s not that much by the end of the week, so we do it weekly.
When I had two dogs, I picked it up every 2nd-3rd day.
Dogs that come to the Salon who poo on the front lawn, I pick it up with a pooper scooper and bit it directly into the bin.
For those who live in apartments or have no yard, your dog can still poo hygienically.
My good friend has Chopper the pug, and they live in an apartment in Sydney.
This is what they use –
They place it on their balcony and when Chopper needs to go he stands at the door, they let him out and there he goes.
He also gets walks everyday so he goes while he’s out as well.
This is where the biodegradable dog poo bags come in.
Yes, most if not all, Councils in Australia require you to pick up after your dog if they poo while you’re out.
It’s common decency and keeps our walkways and streets etc clean and hygienic.
You can pick up dog poo bags at most grocery, pet stores, bargain stores. They’re not expensive.
There’s also containers you can attach to their dog lead so you’re not having to carry them.
It’s important to keep an area available to your dog so they can go to the toilet, no matter where you live.
There are Clean and Green ways to dispose of your dog’s poo.
Check it out, your dog and your garden will love you for it.

“It’s important to keep an area available to your dog so they can go to the toilet, no matter where you live” – That’s totally true!

That’s exactly right Norman, they need somewhere to go too. And it’s important to clean up after them so everything is sanitary.
