New Year’s Resolutions – How To Set Them So You Don’t Fail!!

Hey Woofa’s,

Welcome to 2019!!

I know at the beginning of each New Year I don’t necessarily sit down and write a New Year’s Resolution List, anymore, but I do have an idea of what I’d like to achieve.

Sometimes this works for me but lately not so much!

So this year I’m going back to writing a list, checking it twice, and being realistic in what I want to achieve.

It’s easy to write these big grand gestures of changing your career, having a baby, leaving a relationship, starting a relationship, losing weight, having more fun, achieving more at work, being around more for your kids, spending more time with your parents/family etc, but unless you map out HOW you’re actually going to go about these goals and actually taking action, it’ll soon fall apart.

Trust me I know, these last few years I’d say in my head what I wanted to do, but I wouldn’t write down exactly HOW I was going to get there.

For Example

I’ve had my blog now for 3 years in March, each year I’d say to myself, ‘this year I’m going to earn money from my blog’, that’s all good and well but I didn’t really know HOW I was going to go about that!

And here I am almost 3 years later and haven’t earned a cent from my blog.

Why?  Because I didn’t work out the HOW, I didn’t sit down and come up with a doable plan.  I didn’t work out the realistic way of how it would all pan out.

I didn’t work out how much I would like earn, I didn’t work out what avenue the money would be coming from, I didn’t work out EXACTLY what I needed to do to earn this money from my blog.

Do you get my drift?

It’s all good and well to say, this is what I want to achieve, but unless you’re passionate about it, and work out the steps you need to take to get there, then you’re going to fail.

You can say, I want to climb Mt Everest! But unless you work out, small step by small step, what you need to do, you won’t make it!

For Example:

  • Do you need to work on your physical abilities;
  • what level of physical ability do you need to be able to succeed the climb;
  • should you seek others who have done it and ask their advice;
  • working out how you’ll get to Mt Everest;
  • do you need to earn money to make the trip to get there;
  • the tools you’ll need etc etc etc

Deciding to climb Mt Everest and actually doing it are very far apart.  It’s what’s in the middle that’s going to get you there.

The steps you need to take, the passion to achieve that goal and most importantly the WHY of it all.

If you’re passionate about the WHY of doing it then each small step will bring you closer to achieving it.

So that’s all good and well, but I don’t want to climb Mt Everest!!!  I hear you say….!

Well the same strategy applies to anything you want to put on your New Year’s Resolution List!

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION LIST STRATEGY!!!

  1. Write down all the things you think you want to achieve;
  2. Go over and over the list to make sure it’s realistic to you;
  3. Pick out the one you’re passionate about achieving the most;
  4. Get down right REAL with yourself;
  5. Ask yourself, WHY, you want to achieve it;
  6. Ask yourself, WHY is it so important to you;
  7. Ask yourself, WHAT will I get once I achieve this goal;
  8. Ask yourself, HOW will I feel once I achieve this goal;
  9. Ask yourself, am I excited by this goal;
  10. Ask yourself, are these emotions strong enough to get me through the days where I don’t want to do it anymore;
  11. Ask yourself, who will I be accountable to if I don’t achieve this goal;
  12. Ask yourself, HOW will I stay motivated by this goal;
  13. Sit down and really work out small step by small step HOW you’re going to achieve this goal;
  14. WHAT can YOU do EACH DAY that will bring you closer to that goal;
  15. Work out if you’re the type to tell someone else about your goal, so they can motivate you on those down days, or become excited with you and keep you excited by it.  This can be your dog!  Or are you the quiet achiever that would rather keep it to yourself?
  16. NOW TAKE ACTION!  Actually, go and do those daily steps you need to do that will bring you closer and closer to achieving your goal.  You can do all the other steps, but if you don’t take any ACTION, then you’ll fail at achieving the goal.  ACTIONS, speak louder than words remember!!!
  17. TICK each daily action off your list once you’ve completed it;
  18. BE grateful for what you have achieved daily;
  19. Be your own cheer squad, this is YOUR LIFE, only YOU can achieve what’s deep down in your heart and soul;
  20. Repeat each step for each goal.  Only focus on 1-2 at a time, if you choose too many you’ll overwhelm yourself and won’t achieve anything.

Good luck – I’m off to get real about my achievements this year!

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH MY DOG?

Some of your goals may include your dog and that’s awesome.

However, if they don’t, know that your dog will be with you each and every small step of the way.

You can sit down and talk to your dog about your list, your daily achievements, cry about what you didn’t achieve and pick up and try harder tomorrow.

Your dog is your cheerleader, your dog already knows you can achieve anything you put your mind to!  You just have to believe it yourself!

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?

If you want to try making a New Year’s Resolution List this is a fail proof way of making it, if you want to be realistic about it.

Most importantly though, you have to be true to yourself and what you want to achieve.

No-one else can make the list for you, take the steps required and achieve the goals YOU want to set!

IT’S UP TO YOU!!
