Black Hawk Dog Food Brand 2020 Recall!

Hey Woofa’s,

It has come to my attention recently that owners of Black Hawk Dog Food Brand have done a voluntary recall!

Some of their products that were manufactured last year have resulted in the development of mould.

Black Hawk reports that there have been no records to date of illness in any animals.

If you are a Black Hawk brand consumer I suggest you check your product immediately.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a product that hasn’t been recalled, check it for mould regardless.

Black Hawk also suggest that if your product is affected by mould then you will see it immediately.  However, there are no pictures  or descriptions of what to expect.

The worrying thing is that Black Hawk note (in capital letters on their website) that they made the decision to VOLUNTARILY AND IMMEDIATELY RECALL these products!!  As if there was any other choice!

While it’s appreciative that they have put the health concern of our dogs first, shouldn’t that ALWAYS be the choice when you’re a pet food company?

I stopped using Black Hawk years ago when I heard their manufacturing was going offshore, and now I know why?

Note – Even if I had a Black Hawk product that wasn’t on this list, I would still check it.  The Safety of our dogs comes first.

WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE AN AFFECTED PRODUCT?

  • Immediately stop feeding it to your dog/s.
  • Take the affected product to the place you purchased it, where the retailer will provide you with a replacement bag of food!
  • Monitor your dog for any signs of illness, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy or anything out of character for them.
  • Find another dog food brand to feed your dog.
  • When in doubt, give your trusted vet a call and discuss the matter with them.  Find out any steps you can take to keep your dog/s healthy and well.

UNSURE OF WHAT TO DO?

Black Hawk have a customer service number on their website – 1300 654 279 that you can call for further enquiries.

Email – customer.service@masterpet.com.au

Please note that they also mention a slight delay of 5 working days for responses.

HOW TO TRANSITION YOUR DOG TO ANOTHER FOOD BRAND!

Generally, it takes roughly 5 days to transition your dog over to another type of food/brand.

What you need to do is slowly replace small portions of your dog’s current food with the new food, say 1/4 of a cup each time.

However, if your dog ONLY eats Black Hawk food that has been affected, you will have to give super small amounts of the dry food to your dog during the whole day.

For instance, portion out what you would give your dog for dinner, then give your dog 5-10 pieces of kibble every so often during a long period of time.  This way you can watch for any signs of illness from the change.

This might be annoying but it could also save you a vet bill.

If your dog shows any signs of tummy upset the best alternative is to give them boiled chicken and rice.

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN?

If you use Black Hawk Dog Food check it immediately for mould!!

STOP feeding it to your dog!

Return it to the retailer if you have an affected product.

Watch your dog for any signs of illness.

Transition your dog slowly to their new food.

Our dog’s health and well being are first and foremost.

Pays to fact check before posting articles. Black Hawk is manufactured in Dubbo, NSW. Last I knew, this is in Australia. Saying is made overseas is not correct.
    thank you

Hey Peter, thanks for your comment. Black Hawk did go offshore to New Zealand, a company called MasterPet bought Black Hawk in 2014 – http://masterpet.com/about-masterpet/our-history/
While they insist everything is the same, i.e. still Australian as there is an Australian branch of MasterPet, it’s still owned by a New Zealand company. I.E. I love New Zealand’s Ziwi products so nothing against them, it just makes me weary when for years Black Hawk had a great reputation and now they’re having to do recalls.
Some ingredients have changed slightly though – https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/dry-dog-food/black-hawk-grain-free/
      Cheers

I’ve taken my dog to the vet as over past 2 weeks he has developed diahrea, which has got progressively worse, yellow in colour and very mucousy and lots of it. The vet said to check food as Black Hawk had recalled food. We thought it was colitis but this explains why a normal dog has got so sick. guess what?, he was eating Fish and Potato, the recalled
fish and potato. Mould spores we could see under a magnifying glass. I feel so terrible as he had gotten worse and it was my fault. Why didn’t petbarn contact me as a regular registered customer. This is the second recall on this brand of food we fed him previously the recalled salmon. So angry and disappointed. Changing brands now and will research more thoroughly this time

No one ever wants to see their dog sick, don’t blame yourself you weren’t to know because you weren’t told. Maybe next time you’re in your local Petbarn store let them know what happened and express your concern that they should’ve let their customers know of the recall. I hope your dog is feeling better, and you’re a great dog mum. We changed to Meals For Mutts brand, you can get it online at Pet Circle, if you’d like to give that one a try. xoxo

Thank you for your comforting reply, yes have let Petbarn know. They were really apologetic and said they would pass my comments on, re putting up notifications next to foods that have been affected and suggested maybe being proactive and alerting members to a problem, as getting on the front foot gives a member/consumer assurance they are looking out and after you. Full refund given. Medication given is helping with clearing it up. Will check out Meals for Mutts brand, appreciate your feedback so much, Hoover’s mum

I’m glad to hear that Petbarn have taken some accountability and will put new procedures into action when it comes to recalled food and alerting their customers. Well done to you, you helped that movement. I hope Hoover makes a full recovery very soon xoxo Thanks for sharing your story with us.
