Hey Woofa’s,
We’re in winter and we’re in a second wave of covid19 here in NSW 🙁
So what does one do when this happens – you retreat, stay at home and watch movies.
I’m a horror and sci-fi fan but this time I plucked up the courage and went for a Dog Movie!
Usually, I steer clear of dog movies because there’s ALWAYS a scene where something ‘not so nice’ happens to the dog and I end up bawling like a baby – even after the movie is finished!!!
It’s for that reason alone I generally try to avoid them.
Yes I can watch horror and sci fi movies where people are not so nice to other people etc but I cannot stand it when something happens to the animals in movies.
Anyway, as I said I plucked up the courage and found A Dog Year on Foxtel and thought I’d give it a go.
Actor Jeff Bridges plays the part of Jon Katz, an author who is suffering from writer’s block.
Jon is also a dog lover who already has two older Labrador’s named Lily and Julius.
Jon decides to take on a younger troublesome Border Collie, named Devon.
Devon proves to be much more than Jon can handle, he gets into all sorts of trouble, so much so Jon wants to send Devon back!
Devon doesn’t do anything that a puppy hasn’t done before but it does start the bond between the two of them.
Dog’s can really push us to our limits, especially going through the puppy stage.
Jon’s daughter comes to check up on him because he’s not answering his editor’s calls, or his wife’s calls.
And this is where it gets sad because Julius starts to go down hill and goes to Rainbow Bridge. This is the part that breaks my heart and if you’re a dog lover it’ll break yours too.
Probably because we’ve all been in that situation and it brings up so much heart ache.
Anyway, his daughter takes Lily while Jon moves to the country for a few months with Devon, hoping to get his writing juices flowing.
Before long, Jon and Devon are known amongst the locals who are quick to suggest Jon get help from a Dog Trainer.
The dog trainer (who isn’t named) is a no-nonsense woman who gets straight to the point with Jon and Devon regarding what’s required.
Needless to say both Jon and Devon fail at their first attempt. Joe the trainer’s dog shows them how it’s done.
Watching border collies herd sheep is truly magical when done correctly.
Jon also learns a lot about himself during Devon’s training.
Jon and Devon find their connection through Devon’s training and Jon finally starts writing again.
Devon becomes the subject of his novel.
This movie is actually based on a true story.
Jon Katz amongst many things is an author.
For more information, check him out here – Jon Katz!
If you prefer to read his book on Devon and others – click here Jon Katz books!
Jon Katz also has a website called – Bedlam Farm Journal!
That if you want to watch a dog movie, this is a sweet natured one that teaches us that we’re part of the dog training problem as well.
Yes there is a very sad part, but you do eventually get through it.
Give it a watch and let us know what you think!
IN THE COMMENTS BELOW – BILLY WOULD LIKE TO KNOW – WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF A DOG YEAR?
Cheers
